Sun Microsystems India Pvt Ltd, a provider of industrial strength hardware, software and services, and NIIT, an IT trainer in India, announced an alliance to offer training in the growing open source computing, through Sun Solaris Training programs.

As a part of alliance, NIIT will offer specialized training programs through its network of education centres as well as specialized Solaris labs to be set up in key metro cities. Also, NIIT will have access to the latest Sun technologies, tools, technical resources and curricula on Java and XML, and Solaris OS System administration.

This initiative is the latest in Sun’s drive to provide academic developers with the educational tools and resources they need to cultivate important IT skills, participate in global economy, and contribute to the innovation of new technologies.

Karie Wilyerd, vice president and chief learning officer at Sun Microsystems, said, "Sun's goal is to empower academic developers through sharing, collaboration and open innovation—the key elements of what we at Sun refer to as the participation age. Our relationship with NIIT lets students help each other, gain hands-on experience with leading-edge, open source technologies and prepare for the next age in the education process—what we term as Learning 2.0."

Vijay K Thadani, CEO of NIIT, stated, "The industry is currently grappling with the exceeding shortage of skilled manpower in emerging global technologies. We are happy to further strengthen our partnership with Sun, in line with our efforts to provide the latest and best technology training programs for students and the industry. Through this initiative, students will gain relevant skills and employability and the IT industry will have access to a pool of trained manpower on emerging technologies including open source computing."
