IBM, in IT products, announced its plan for expansion of operations at its IBM India Research Laboratory, one of the eight labs of IBM Research worldwide. As part of this expansion, IBM India Research Laboratory, New Delhi, earlier located within the IIT campus, has moved to a larger facility in the Vasant Kunj Institutional Area, New Delhi. The new laboratory has more than double the floor space of the earlier location, better infrastructure and will provide IBM better bandwidth to address innovation needs of a larger client base worldwide.

This expansion is in addition to an earlier opening of the lab’s Bangalore site. The expansion of IBM Research facilities in India is driven by a growth in research activities related to IBM’s software, services and systems businesses, as well as client collaborations in India. The lab is also working on establishing a standards-driven, secure and cost-effective infrastructure to coordinate healthcare information through a system that includes central, state and local governments, as well as private providers, for both rural and urban locations across India.

India Research Laboratory is focused on a number of key areas, including: information & knowledge management, interaction and collaboration technologies, systems management, distributed & high performance computing, software engineering, analytics & optimizations, services innovation, telecommunications research, and industry solutions research. The laboratory also provides support to faculty and students from many institutes of higher learning including IITs, IISc, ISB, IIMs etc., sponsoring faculty awards, fellowship and grants. The lab is collaborating with the Indian School of Business on first-of-its-kind research on SSME (service science, management and engineering) in India.

Dan Dias, Director of IBM India research laboratory, said, "IBM Research has been in India for about 10 years, and we are committed to innovation that matters, for our company and for the world. This is evident from the fact that no other company has the resources committed to innovation that IBM does – $5 billion to $6 billion a year invested in R&D. We are proud of our rich talent pool – more than 3,000 scientists work in close collaboration spread across our eight research labs around the world. IBM has earned more US patents than any other company for 14 consecutive years."
