With the LTC4253 IC from Linear Technology Corp, you can control the sequencing of a trio of -48V dc/dc converters to ensure their proper “power-on” transitions relative to each other. This is vital in hot-swap applications, such as where a dc bus is distributed over a backplane to local power converters on each board. The IC features a circuit breaker that will trip and cut primary power if an overcurrent condition persists for longer than a user-specified time. In addition, for larger overcurrent conditions, active current limiting maintains a safe power level in the MOSFET. Even more, for major, catastrophic overcurrent surges, such as due to a short circuit, the fast comparator will trip immediately to protect the load and the MOSFET.
The LTC4253 hot-swap controller for -48V supplies sports three modes of overcurrent protection.
Using designated pins, you can set under- and over-voltage levels to set an operating range. Due to its floating topology, the LTC4253 can operate from-15V down to large negative voltages. The 16-pin SSOP device is US$2.95 (1000 pieces).
