MSO enhances analysis and verification of mixed signal designs

( 01 Nov 2002 )
Shree Jaisimha

Agilent’s Infiniium 54830-series of mixed signal oscilloscopes (MSOs) combines the performance of a scope with 16-channel timing measurements of a logic analyzer to address the test and measurement of mixed signals with bandwidth in the range of 600 MHz to 1 GHz.

The MSOs allow up to four analog and 16 digital channels (20 time-aligned signals) for analysis. Utilizing a proprietary MegaZoom deep memory technology (2- to 4-Mbyte standard, with an option of 4- to 16-Mbyte) at a sampling rate of 4 Gsamples/s and 8-bit resolution, the MSOs allow for profiling of signal anomalies as narrow as 250-ps without peak detection. An analog-like display refresh rate is achieved via a dedicated display system ASIC that connects all logic channels.

Communication mask testing involving ANSI, ITU-T and IEEE standard product compliance is supported via library add-ons, along with test support for USB2.0 (low/full speed USB devices). The USB 2.0 test option in particular allows for signals captured on the scope to be processed via a USB test interface, with direct Matlab script in the MSO. This is an improvement over past practices that involved transferring captured scope signals to the PC for scaling before converting to .tsv format for Matlab analysis.

The PC architecture of the 54830 series supports both GPIB and 10/100 Mbps LAN connectivity to allow for Web-enabled remote control and email on trigger. Future recalls or sharing of information are possible via a 5-Gbyte built-in hard drive storage and floppy drive. A software upgradability option via CDROM is also included.
