Signal generators simplify RF measurements

( 01 Nov 2002 )
Shree Jaisimha

At the diminutive size of 107×419×510 mm, and weighing only 10.5 kg, IFR’s 3410 is the first digital RF signal generator to compact digital, vector and analog modulation into a 2U rack size. The 2U size allows for easy storage and less cumbersome placement in lab racks. The system‘s size and weight are 35 to 50% lower than competing instruments.

The 3410 series also features the first touch screen user interface in a digital RF generator. A two-tier menu structure ensures easy control, and a hard key method complements the user interface.

The 3410 emulates RF carriers up to 4 GHz and includes both analog (FM, AM, phase and pulse modulation) and broadband vector modulation. Fitted internally with an optional digital dual-channel arbitrary waveform generator (ARB), the system can be used for testing and emulation of RF signals in 2G, 3G and 4G systems, private mobile radios, wireless LANs (including 802.11b and 802.11g) and Bluetooth systems. The ARB’s memory can be extended to include 22.5 Msamples, and can store a full 3G PP file with 153 frames. You can download files into the ARB via the IQCreator software supplied with the system.

The system’s inherent low VSWR design and ±0.5-dB RF level accuracy ensure low measurement error. This allows you to record precise and repeatable instances in autoregressive test cases. The 3410 series also keeps carrier frequency and RF level switching speeds to less than 5 ms, and hardware support caters to USB1.1. The system uses a built-in electronic attenuation for proper scaling of the input signal, to ensure that system breakdown due to signal fluctuations is kept to a minimum.
