New research study presents comprehensive view of Power Architecture Processor market opportunity

(Business News, 10 Oct 2007 )

At the Power Architecture Developer Conference recently, Power.org said it had completed the most comprehensive research study ever undertaken on Power Architecture processors and the diverse markets they serve. The research, conducted by IDC, features a data analysis tool to help users identify and gauge emerging growth opportunities for the Power Architecture technology platform.

The Power.org report, called the Power Architecture Market Model, focuses on the embedded processor space. It provides market sizing and forecast data in more than 70 categories of embedded electronic devices both current and future opportunities for Power Architecture processors through 2011. IDC built an innovative query tool into the market model that lets users customize their views of the research to explore target markets and technical features most relevant to their companies.

"We're committed to informing our members of developments affecting Power Architecture in the marketplace and to identifying the opportunities that will help them grow their businesses," said Fawzi Behmann, chairperson of the Power.org Marketing Committee. "The Power Architecture Market Model is the first in a series of similar Power.org programs designed to help members share insights and foster the collaborative climate needed to grow the architecture."

The report highlights a strong market share leadership for the Power Architecture technology platform in several key market categories, including game consoles, wireless infrastructure, printers, industrial control equipment, medical equipment, Ethernet switches and Wi-Max. Further details are planned for release after the full report is distributed to Power.org members at the end of September.

"In the course of our research, IDC was provided access to every major chip vendor in the Power Architecture community," said Mario Morales, vice president of semiconductor research at IDC. "We combined these companies' data and product roadmaps and offerings with IDC's extensive research on embedded processors and devices and came up with what we believe is the most complete picture to date of the market size and opportunity for the embedded processor marketplace."

Previously, companies invested in Power Architecture technology commissioned custom research to gauge the total available market for the technology platform. Those studies provided only a partial or extrapolated view of the market, largely because competitors' data were hard to come by. For the Power Architecture Market Model, Power.org served as a unifying agent and a trusted collection point for competitors to contribute their companies' privileged information. These companies' proprietary data sets were aggregated and filtered to provide a direct, reliable assessment of Power Architecture market size.

"The accuracy and breadth of perspective presented in this research study would not have been possible without a collaborative forum such as Power.org," said Nelda Currah, chair of the Power Brand Advisory Council, which developed the Power Architecture Market Model. "Power.org provided the means for competitors to work together on Power Architecture market sizing, because they knew there was this mediating organization that could be trusted to safeguard the sensitive information they contributed. As a result, the entire Power Architecture community benefits from a new, holistic view of the technology platform."
