2.2MHz, Dual-Output DC-DC Converters with 80V Load-Dump Protection Are Ideal for Automotive Applications

(Product News, 28 Aug 2008 )

Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX5098A/MAX5099 dual-output, high-switching-frequency DC-DC converters capable of delivering 2A and 1A of output current. Designed to operate directly from a car battery, these converters integrate load-dump protection circuitry to handle transients up to 80V, and they operate down to 4.5V to withstand cold-crank conditions. Additionally, these devices feature a wide, 200kHz to 2.2MHz, programmable switching-frequency range, thus allowing them to operate outside of the AM radio band. The robust protection features and wide switching-frequency range make the MAX5098A/MAX5099 ideal for automotive applications such as head units, instrument-cluster displays, and car radios.

These DC-DC converters can operate 180 degrees out-of-phase with an adjustable switching frequency. This capability minimizes external component count while allowing the designer to make trade-offs between size, efficiency, and cost. In addition, the MAX5098A/MAX5099 utilize voltage-mode control for stable operation and external compensation so that the loop gain is tailored to optimize component selection and transient response. Integrating an n-channel MOSFET that can be used in a high-side or low-side configuration, these devices can be configured either as boost or buck converters. The MAX5099 also integrates two low-side MOSFET drivers for synchronous operation.

The MAX5098A/MAX5099 are available in a thermally enhanced, 5mm x 5mm, 32-pin TQFN package with an exposed pad, and they are fully specified over the -40 degrees Celsius to +125 degrees Celsius automotive temperature range. Prices start at $2.59 (1000-up, FOB USA).
