Ocean Blue Software has launched Sunrise, said to be the world’s first software range to power the next generation of High Definition televisions (HDTVs). For the first time, Sunrise will enable viewers to receive HD, digital, and analogue transmissions on a single internal chipset, as opposed to the multiple chips currently in use within LCD or Plasma TVs.
The software also incorporates power saving functions and USB support.
Ken Helps, CEO, Ocean Blue Software said, “High Definition will be the hottest broadcast technology of 2009 and the single chipset solution for televisions will be the panacea. Standards such as DVB-T2 have only been finalised this summer. Ocean Blue is working closely with the semiconductor industry to produce the hardware & software solution that will power the new generation of energy efficient televisions.”
Governments of many countries throughout the world are setting dates for their own ‘digital switch-over’. The UK is taking a staggered, regional approach with the entire country experiencing a complete analogue turn-off by 2012. China has set its switch-over date for 2015.
By combining multiple broadcast types and functions on a single chip Ocean Blue’s Sunrise will help OEMs to cut development time and reduce software and hardware costs for the next breed of HDTVs. Sunrise also supports the world standard USB connectivity, this enables plug in hardware devices such as printers and software, for example. Software updates can be downloaded via the web to a memory stick and then to a TV.
Using a single user interface, Ocean Blue’s Sunrise software enables channel tuning for both analogue and digital, as well as easy dual set-up process for Integrated Digital TVs, providing a better user experience across multiple broadcast signals.
The new software monitors device usage and will help tackle the increasing problem of standby power consumption, which currently costs UK householders over Ł500 million a year, producing some 3.1 million tonnes of CO2. With China being the world’s largest television market the savings to householders and the environment will be significantly higher.
The Sunrise multi-purpose software range is based on Ocean Blue’s Sunrise DVB core software product, with variations including DVB-T (terrestrial), DVB-S (satellite), and DVB-H (handheld).
Helps concluded, “The new generation of chipsets for televisions enabled with Ocean Blue’s software solutions will include functions allowing TV to be switched into energy saving mode, rather than just standby mode. The team at Ocean Blue has been eagerly awaiting the hardware to catch up with our revolutionary Sunrise ECO-TV, which facilities the monitoring and switching off of electronic devices to the energy saving mode, saving power, money and helping the environment “
