Freescale’s latest PowerQUICC processor runs at 400MHz

( 01 Jan 2010 )
By Stephen Las Marias, Editor, EDN Asia

Freescale Semiconductor has launched its latest highly integrated PowerQUICC MPC8308 processor that runs at speeds up to 400MHz and is designed for low-end embedded networking and industrial applications. Powered by Freescale’s e300 core, which is based on Power Architecture technology, the device features high-speed interconnects and newer interfaces, and offers an ideal migration path for Freescale’s PowerQUICC I and low-end PowerQUICC II customers looking to preserve the value of their legacy software.

The MPC8308 processor supports dual 10/100/1000Mbps Ethernet controllers, single lane PCI Express, USB 2.0 controller, DDR2 memory controller, local bus for boot from NAND flash support, enhanced SDHC controller for SD memory interface, dual universal asynchronous receiver/transmitters (DUART), serial peripherals, general-purpose I/O and system timers.

The MPC8308 also features an integrated IEEE 1588 time synchronization for applications such as time-sensitive telecommunications services, industrial network switches, powerline networks, and test and measurement devices. The MPC8308 comes in a 19x19mm 473-pin MAPBGA package at a 0.8mm pitch.
