3M Enhances ECM Production Capability in China

(Business News, 09 Apr 2010 )

The 3M Electronic Solutions Division has installed local converting capability in China for its Embedded Capacitance Material (ECM). As of January 2010, 3M now converts ECM at the company’s Guangzhou, China facility in the southeast province of Guangdong, enabling shorter lead times for printed circuit board (PCB) fabricators in Asia. The facility will convert bulk material into finished product, ready for customer use. 3M will also continue to convert ECM in the U.S.

3M teams in Asia consist of scientists, application engineers and sales personnel who help customers optimize their PCB designs and manufacturing processes using ECM.

The converting equipment in 3M’s Guangzhou facility was designed to match U.S.-based equipment. The final ECM product converted in China conforms to U.S. production quality standards for packaging durability, dimensions and electrical performance.

3M’s ECM is a thin, high-performance capacitor laminate, which can be embedded into PCBs and chip packages. The material reduces impedance, power bus noise, PCB EMI and discrete capacitor count. It allows design engineers to differentiate their products through improved performance and reduced size. The material has been used successfully in applications for a variety of industries, including telecom, computer hardware, test and measurement, military/aerospace, medical and consumer electronics.

3M’s ECM is compatible with most rigid and flex PCB processing, including laser drilling. Fabricators and original equipment manufacturers worldwide may use the 3M ECM without obtaining a license from 3M. The material is RoHS compliant.
