Three-channel PMIC Targeted at Embedded Camera Modules

( 01 Sep 2010 )
By Stephen Las Marias, Editor, EDN Asia

Texas Instruments Inc.’s TPS657051/52 power management ICs (PMICs) are targeted at embedded camera module or other portable low-power consumer end equipments. The devices contain two highly efficient 400mA step-down converters and a 200mA low dropout linear regulator (LDO) that operates with an input voltage range between 1.7V and 6V, allowing it to be supplied from the output of the step-down converter or directly from the system voltage.

The PMICs’ 2.25MHz step-down converter enters a low power mode at light load for maximum efficiency—up to 92 percent—across the widest possible range of load currents. For low noise applications, the devices can be forced into fixed frequency PWM mode using the MODE pin.

TI’s TPS657051/52 PMICs allow the use of small inductors and capacitors to achieve a small sized solution. They come in a 2x2mm 16-ball wafer chip scale package (WCSP) with a 0.5mm ball pitch. The devices have automatic PFM/PWM operation, Power Save Mode at light-load current, and output voltage accuracy in PWM mode ±1.5 percent.
