By Yao Gang, Deputy Chief Editor, EDN China

GalaxyCore Inc., one of the leading semiconductor design companies in China, focuses on developing and providing high quality and cost-effective CMOS image sensor solutions worldwide. Established in 2003, GalaxyCore has developed a variety of resolution levels chips including VGA, SXGA, and UXGA. The company owns innovative CIS technologies, and already had several CIS patents granted in the United States.

GalaxyCore products have fundamental breakthrough in performance and achieve CCD image quality while maintaining the smaller size, lower cost, lower power and integration advantages of CMOS. One of the company’s latest products, the GC0308 CIS, uses the company’s latest pixel image signal processing functions, provides customers with a complete single-chip VGA camera system and different design features, and has one-dimensional (EAN13 and EAN8) bar code recognition and motion detection capabilities. In addition, the product also features color correction, noise elimination, and image resize.

The company currently accounts for more than 40 percent of China’s CIS VGA market. “China’s image sensor market is about 400 million units a year. Galaxycore’s goal is to win more than half this year,” says Stanley Zhao, CEO, GalaxyCore. As of February this year, GalaxyCore, with its key foundry partner SMIC, has shipped 100,000 8in wafers.
