Although logic semiconductor components can be more often associated with the computing market, even more attractive opportunities exist in other markets, such as in wireless communications and in displays for the latest consumer electronics.
For the logic market on its own, without microprocessors included, communications (and especially wireless) applications have created the largest consumption segment, at an estimated $26.3 billion for 2010, according to market analyst Databeans Inc. This is also the fastest growing segment at 10 percent revenue growth for the duration of the forecast period through 2015.
Most of the new growth in the communications market has been attributed to increasing wireless demand. Wireless technology continues to drive the overall semiconductor industry to higher revenue levels. While the computer market is still largest for semiconductors, wireless applications have been outperforming the rest of the field, the other major markets, in terms of semiconductor revenue growth, and this trend will continue to accelerate.
Logic devices revenue for this year is expected to approach $75 billion, representing 15 percent revenue growth. Average growth for the forecast period will likely be 8 percent for revenue and 9 percent for units shipped.
