Aptina's MobileHDR technology received the I3A's VISION 2020 Imaging Innovation Bronze award at the recent 6Sight Mobile Imaging Summit event in San Jose.
Aptina MobileHDR technology, a form of intra-frame multi-exposure HDR capture, makes it possible for image sensors used in mobile and digital still cameras to cost-effectively capture natural high-range scenes in video as well as snapshot mode, providing a leap forward in image quality.
I3A (the International Imaging Industry Association) is the leading global association for the imaging industry. The VISION 2020 Imaging Innovation Awards program seeks to energize, recognize and celebrate innovators whose ideas will drive the industry toward a vision of an intelligent imaging future.
“High Dynamic Range (HDR) technology was previously featured in specialized applications like automotive, security or industrial camera systems. Aptina’s MobileHDR technology, when integrated into a single System-on-a-Chip (SoC) image sensor solution, enables camera phone developers to differentiate their solutions, utilizing the sensor’s total dynamic response of approximately 80dB and integrated tone-mapping, all operating at video frame rates. Essentially, these high-performance image sensors provide a cost-effective solution for capturing a wider range of naturally occurring scenes in mobile cameras without clipping highlights and lowlights,” said Bob Gove, President and Chief Technology Officer at Aptina. “We are very pleased to have been recognized by I3A in this year’s VISION 2020 competition.”
The Vision 2020 entries were evaluated by an independent panel of judges, made up of industry experts, venture capitalists, entrepreneurs and analysts. The judges ranked each entry according to the submission's relevance to the imaging industry, its potential market impact, the method of impact, its uniqueness and its implementation status.
“Aptina’s HDR technology represents an advance that will have broad impact on the industry,” said I3A President Lisa Walker. “I3A is pleased to recognize and reward Aptina’s cost-effective approach to solving the issues of high quality image capture in mobile devices under a range of challenging illumination environments.”
