Pulse Transformers Significantly Reduce Board Sizes

(Product News, 10 Aug 2011 )

TDK-EPC has developed a new series of EPCOS EP5 SMT pulse transformers used to couple gate-drive circuits to MOSFETs and IGBTs operating at switching frequencies within a range of 150kHz to several MHz.

Available with a wide range of turns ratios, polarities and outputs, the new transformers use miniaturized EP5 cores - giving the devices a compact dimension of only 8.1x6.7x5.4mm. As several transformers are usually used in a circuit, the size reduction of the devices results in significant space savings on the circuit board.

Also, the devices' winding technology limits parasitic capacitances between windings to around 25pF to 95pF only. Stray inductances are likewise low, ranging between 0.9µH and 2.5µH. Short-term dielectric strength is tested to 1.5kV DC for all types of the B82804A* series. These components are designed for ambient temperatures of up to 85°C and operating temperatures of up to 125°C. Their terminal configuration and pin assignment correspond to the industry standard.

The products are mainly suited to half- and full-bridge converters as well as in frequency converters or inverters.
