Huawei acquires optical R&D facility in the U.K.

Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd has acquired the Centre for Integrated Photonics Ltd (CIP) in Ipswich, United Kingdom to bolster its European presence. The acquisition was made in line with the company’s announcement in 2011 that it will double its U.K. workforce to 1,000 as well as open a European design center for its mobile device business in London.

CIP, a photonics research laboratory, will significantly deepen the optical R&D capabilities of Huawei. CIP’s current R&D team will be retained by Huawei and will form the core of the new R&D centre, and part of Huawei’s global R&D network. The Centre has a reputation as a world-class incubator in fibre optic transmission and carries out cutting edge research work. Huawei will continue to invest in fibre optic R&D to ensure that CIP remains an innovator in this particular technology sector.
