Synthesizer reduces RF BOM and footprint by up to 60%

( 01 Aug 2005 )

STMicroelectronics’ STW81100 is a multi-band integrated RF synthesizer with voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs) for wireless communication and test equipment systems. This single-chip device is an alternative to discrete PLL and VCO solutions which typically require two chips and are usually bulky and expensive. Additionally, the STW81100 offers indirect cost reduction as a one-chip approach increases reliability, reduces board space, reduces the number of external discrete components, making it an overall cost-effective solution. The chip includes an Integer-N frequency synthesizer and two fully integrated VCOs which feature low phase noise performance and a noise floor of -153dBc/Hz. The combination of wide frequency-range VCOs and multiple output options (direct output, divided by 2,or divided by 4) allows the synthesizer to cover the 820 to 1100MHz, 1640 to 2200MHz and 3280 to 4400MHz bands.
