Low power 90nm WLAN single chip solution

( 01 Nov 2005 )

Marvell’s "ultra-low"power 90nm Wireless LAN (WLAN) single chip solution draws less than 400Mw, and comes in a small system footprint—less than 50mm2. The Marvell 88W8686 integrates an ARM compliant CPU, high speed serial host interfaces including SDIO and SPI to ensure interoperability with a variety of host systems, and advanced 802.11 a/b/g RF transceiver with full cellular coexistence. Targeted at a wide variety of consumer devices, including 3G+ and broadband handsets, the Marvell 88W8686 has full compliance for advanced communications standards including complete support for L3, TCP/IP, UMA and IMS. The device incorporates Marvell’s thick MAC architecture, and offloads the host CPU-resulting in lower power and increased system performance. The Marvell 88W8686 is fully backwards compatible, with Marvell’s field proven, industry leading WLAN software suite for Linux, Symbian, Windows CE and other proprietary operating systems.

"Our vision of the smallest and lowest-power silicon solution drove our 90nm process development. The Marvell 88W8686 gives our customers the ability to enhance battery life by at least 100%," says Dr. Paramesh Gopi, general manager of the Embedded and Emerging Business Unit, Communications and Consumer Business Group at Marvell. "This third-generation WLAN solution builds on Marvell’s leadership in system software, and adds revolutionary new features for consumer products."
