DC/DC converter yields low-profile PoE supply

( 01 Nov 2005 )
By Bill Schweber

Addressing the needs of power-over-Ethernet (PoE) IEEE803.3af applications, Power Integrations has packed their DPA-Switch family of dc/dc converters into smaller, lowerprofile S-PAK enclosures. With footprint that is 40% smaller and height that is 55% lower than the present TO-263 package, this IC drops the 48Vdc of PoE power to lower voltages inside the client device. The family members handle PoE applications from Class 0 to Class 3 (18 through 100W) and include an internal 220 VMOSFET, as well as voltage-mode control, current limiting, overload protection, soft start, and auto-restart. The S-PAK devices are between $1.36 and $2.66 each, in 1000-piece orders.
