TI's Profibus transceivers for industrial networks

( 01 Dec 2003 )

Supplying system designers with a new level of performance, Texas Instruments (TI) has announced the availability of new PROFIBUS transceivers that offer low signal distortion and improved reliability. The SN65HVD1176 and SN75HVD1176 transceivers provide improved output transition skew of less than 1ns (0.2nsec typical), giving system designers the ability to tighten up the total timing budget of their networked applications. HVD1176 also features high ESD protection of 10kV and fail-safe for open, idle and shorted bus conditions, which are ideal for demanding industrial applications.

"Among other reasons, Siemens chose the HVD1176 because it allows our designers to control the timing aspect of the automation process to a greater degree," says Manfred Sand, Siemens A&D AS RD. "The SN65HVD1176 driver output transition skew is so tight that it can be used for special diagnostic functions.

TI's HVD1176 half-duplex transceivers are designed for PROFIBUS and RS-485 networks. Powered by a 5V supply, it is fully compliant with the EN 50170 and TIA/EIA-485 standards. With low skew during output transitions and driver enabling/disabling, this device is suitable for signaling rates up to 40Mbps over long twisted-pair cables. HVD1176 also provides excellent common-mode rejection up to 50MHz and 1/5 unit load to have 160 nodes on a bus.

The SN65HVD1176 and SN75HVD1176 are available now from TI and its authorized worldwide distributors in an 8-pin SOIC package. $1.40 (1000).
