Designed to pump 3- and 4-cell Li-ion battery packs with up to 4A (via external MOSFETs) while operating form a 6 to 28V dc input, the LTC4007 from Linear Technology operates without microcontroller supervision. The 24-pin SSOP IC device integrates all functions needed for charging control, termination, temperature monitoring, battery conditioning, and status and fault monitoring. Its 300-kHz switching frequency reduces size of the needed capacitors and inductors, so you can build a complete charging system for charger cradles, small UPS systems, and portable data terminals in just a 5.6cm2 footprint. To further reduce OEM cost, the LTC4007 can use low-cost ceramic capacitors on input and output.
Charging current is programmable with ±5% accuracy, while current-limiting maximizes the charge rate while preventing overloading of the ac/dc adapter. The IC reports battery - pack charging status and faults, and related parameters, via I/O signals; it also supports a thermistor input for low-cost temperature monitoring. Prices begin at US$3.80 in 1000-piece lots.
