Stereo reproduction of an actual sound stage is hard to achieve in low-cost audio systems. Generally the capture of a soundstage via microphones has inherent flaws. Frequency response distortions, amplifier gain woes coupled with the microphone's own polar response pattern can result in sound that is bland and flat. When we add lossy compression algorithms the degradation can be more severe.
Bit88, a stand-alone console from Singapore-based 1388 Technology, aims to redefine sound reproduction in a very affordable package. Catered to improve MP3, computer music, and PC games experience, Bit88 utilizes a blend of age-old vacuum tube technology (6SN11 vacuum tube), acclaimed audio-enhancement algorithms and an innovative circuit design.
The console employs two patented technologies by SRS Labs called SRS "WOW" and TruBass Technology which enhance soundstage recordings. Its feedback circuit allows deep, controlled bass while adding clarity to mid- and high-frequency ranges. The circuit provides impedance matching, which gives a high-drive capability and can prevent overloading of the sound card of the PC.
Bit88 supports a signal to noise ratio (SNR) that exceeds 85dB, while its frequency response is within 1dB flat from 20Hz to 25KHz, and its channel separation stands better than 80dB. With a high input impedance of 100kW resistance, the console is suitable for any source load matching. Recording enthusiasts, in particular, will benefit from this as BIT88 provides the facility to match the sound card with recording equipment. Power consumption of the console is rated at 3W.
Bit88 targets use in personal computer, MP3s, game stations and home audio applications. Packaged in a 180385160mm footprint, the standalone console comes with a list price of about US$115.
