Discera and Vectron work to make MEMS oscillators a reality for electronics manufacturers

(Technology News, 29 Nov 2006 )

Discera Inc., in CMOS MEMS resonator technology and provider of next-generation timing solutions, and Vectron International, in frequency control and timing solutions, announced that they will work together to make MEMS oscillators a reality for electronics manufacturers.

According to the companies CMOS MEMS-based resonators are a truly disruptive technology that enables electronics companies to remove scalability and cost obstacles that face customers today. MEMS technology overcomes some of today's existing challenges while opening the door way to tomorrow's previously impossible applications through microfabrication technology. MEMS promises to revolutionize nearly every product category by bringing together silicon-based microelectronics with micromachining technology. By using CMOS MEMS oscillators, manufacturers of consumer electronics, hard disc drives and other devices will realize a number of benefits including reduced footprint requirements, shorter lead times, robust construction and lower power. Additionally, the technology can be advanced to support high-precision applications.

Ed Grant, vice president North America products and operations, Vectron, said, "We believe MEMS oscillators are an important part of the future of the frequency control market. While the promise of MEMS oscillators has been around a long time, no vendor has been able to prove their reliability and manufacturability. We believe Discera is positioned to deliver on this promise. We look forward to working together with Discera, utilizing our complementary skills to create industry-defining products."

Discera's PureSilicon resonator technology is a fundamental building block that can be used in creating integrated small form factor consumer electronics and telecommunications products such as oscillators, filters and RF components. Discera's PureSilicon CMOS MEMS Resonator-based timing products offer advantages in size, power and cost along with quality and reliability.

Venkat Bahl, vice president of marketing, Discera, said, "We are very excited about working with Vectron. Working with Vectron, an industry leader, lends tremendous momentum to the MEMS oscillator world in general, and Discera in particular. The two companies are ideally positioned in the market to leverage each others strengths towards creating and strengthening a market dominating position."
